Why Oral Health is important

Dental care in animals is crucial because poor oral health leads to pain, tooth loss, and severe systemic issues, as bacteria from gum disease can spread to the heart, kidneys, and liver, causing organ damage; regular checkups, brushing, and dental chews prevent painful conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis, improving overall health and longevity, similar to human dental hygiene.

Why dental care is vital:
  • Prevents Pain & Infection: Untreated dental disease causes significant pain, infection, and tooth loss, making it hard for pets to eat.
  • Protects Vital Organs: Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to infections and damage in the heart, kidneys, and liver.
  • Early Detection: Annual vet exams catch problems like plaque, tartar, and gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis) before they become severe.
  • Supports Overall Health: Good oral hygiene prevents systemic infections and supports the immune system, contributing to a longer, healthier life.
How to care for your pet's teeth:
  • Regular Vet Checkups: At least annually, for professional cleaning and exams.
  • At-Home Brushing: Daily or several times a week with pet-specific toothpaste and brushes.
  • Dental Chews & Treats: Helps reduce plaque and tartar buildup.
  • Balanced Diet: Proper nutrition supports oral health.
Signs of dental problems:
  • Bad breath, pawing at the mouth, visible tartar, red/bleeding gums, difficulty eating, weight loss, or changes in behavior (irritability).
